Using a Cold Cloth for Comfort

A cold cloth applied to the forehead and neck is a great way to help keep your loved one comfortable.

Ask the Nurse for These Things

  • Clean washcloth and small towel
  • Bowl of cool water. Add ice cubes if needed.
  • You can also use an ice pack for this.
  • Never leave an ice pack on for more than 20 minutes at a time.

  • Ask the nurse if it’s okay to use a cold compress.
  • Watch for skin irritation as you apply.
  • Ask if it feels comfortable.

How to Apply Cold Compress

  1. Choose either the ice pack or a cool, damp cloth.
  2. If using a cloth, dip it in cool water and wring out excess.
  3. If using an ice pack wrap it in a thin towel
  4. Gently place on the forehead or back of the neck.
  5. Leave for 10-15 minutes, refreshing the cloth as needed.

Alternating between cool and room temperature can be soothing.
