PICS-F: When Families Feel the Impact

PICS-F refers to the stress and emotions family members might experience during and after a loved one’s ICU stay. About 14% to 50% of family members with loved ones in the ICU may develop PICS-F. You’re not alone!

The PICS-F Experience

Feelings of PICS-F may include:

  • Anxiety or worry
  • Experiencing sadness or depression
  • Troubled by ICU memories (this can be PTSD)
  • Going through a grieving process
  • Struggling with sleep
  • Battling constant fatigue
  • Finding daily tasks more challenging
  • Noticing these feelings stick around longer than expected
  • Having a hard time supporting your loved one’s recovery
TIP

Be Patient: These feelings can last for months or even years. It’s okay to admit you’re struggling!

What helps with PICS-F?

  1. Take care of yourself: Your needs matter too. Don’t forget to look after yourself while caring for your loved one.
  2. Be present: Stay with your loved one when possible.
  3. Get informed: Ask nurses and doctors to explain what’s happening.
  4. Keep a journal: Write down what’s happening each day.
  5. Get involved: Help with your loved one’s care when it’s safe.
  6. Join a support group: Connect with others who get it.

Remember:

  • Nurses are there to help you too, not just your loved one.
  • It’s okay to ask for family meetings to get updates.
  • Take care of yourself – you matter!
