Offering Spiritual Care

We believe in the power of human connection and shared space in creating healing moments. Here are some tips to help you where you are.

The Power of Loving Presence

Remember that there is great healing power in your presence — simply sitting in silence by the side of your loved one.

Because of your great love for this person this will be a very challenging time. Let the comfort of sitting in silence together be there for you.

You don’t need to do anything but love this person at this moment.

Remember:
  • Always respect the patient’s beliefs and preferences
  • If they’re non-responsive, follow what you know of their wishes
  • Spiritual care can be meaningful even for non-religious individuals

Hold Their Hand

  • A simple touch can be very comforting
  • Hold their hand gently, watching out for IV lines
  • If they’re awake, ask permission first

Prayer or Meditation

  • If prayer is important to them, offer to pray together
  • For non-religious patients, try a simple meditation
  • A moment of silence can be powerful too

Read Sacred or Inspiring Texts

  • Share from religious texts, poetry, or inspirational books
  • Choose passages that offer comfort and hope
  • Read slowly and calmly

Create a Sacred Space

  • Bring meaningful items (check hospital rules first)
  • Try photos, small religious objects, or battery-operated candles
  • Play soft spiritual music if allowed

Connect with Nature

  • Open curtains to let in natural light if possible
  • Bring in a plant or flowers (ask if this is allowed)
  • If real plants aren’t allowed, try a fake one
  • Describe nature scenes or share nature photos

Ask for a Chaplain

TIP

Chaplains support people of all faiths or no faith

  • They offer a listening ear and emotional support
  • They can help with religious rituals if desired
  • Ask the nurse how to request a chaplain visit
