How Your ICU Care Team Communicates

With everything happening in the ICU, you may be wondering how all of these healthcare providers communicate with one another:

Daily Rounds

  • The team meets at your loved one’s bedside each day
  • They discuss care plans and progress
  • Family members are welcome to join
  • This is a great time to ask your questions
TIP

Ask if there is a regular time that the whole care team rounds. Take note of the time. Track questions that come up in our note tool so you can show your care team.

Computer Notes

  • Care providers write notes in a shared computer system
  • This helps the whole team stay updated on your loved one’s care

Quick Updates

  • Nurses can call or message doctors at any time
  • They share concerns or ask questions about your loved one

Talking at the Bedside

  • You’re part of the team too!
  • Ask questions when care providers are in the room
  • It’s okay to write down questions to ask later

Remember…

  • Don’t be shy about asking questions
  • If you don’t understand something, ask for a simpler explanation
  • Your input is valuable to your loved one’s care
