Healing takes more than just medical care. It takes, comfort, rest, and love. Here are some simple tweaks that can help turn your ICU room into a healing space.
SAFETY
Always ask the nurse before making any changes
Cool and Calm
- Bedside Fan
Use a bedside fan for gentle air circulation. You can always bring a fan from home, but you can also ask the nurse if a bedside fan is available. Position it for gentle, indirect airflow. Adjust the speed as needed. - Adjust Room Temp
Ask about adjusting room temperature for comfort. Optimal temperature is between 68-72 degrees.
Soothing Sounds
- White Noise
Try a white noise machine to mask hospital noises. You can either purchase a cheap noise machine at your local retailer or download an app on your phone that offers free white noise. Try different sounds (rain, ocean waves, etc) to find what is most calming.
- Alarm volumes
Politely ask the nurse if non-critical alarms can be adjusted.
Lights Down
- Dim lights
Use softer, indirect lighting when possible. If you have a salt light at home, feel free to bring it in.
- Natural light
Adjust blinds to mimic natural day/night cycles.
Peace and Quiet
- Ear Plugs
Offer earplugs to reduce noise disturbances. Offer soft foam ones and make sure to insert very gently.
- Close Door
If allowed, ask to close the door if allowed to minimize hallway noise
Comfort from Home
- Familiar items
A favorite photo, soft blanket, or even a scent can be comforting.
